What is the festival?

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a traditional festival celebrated in Chinese culture. Similar holidays are celebrated in majority of the country in the East and Southeast Asia.

The history of the this Festival dates back over 3,000 years. The festival is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar with a full moon at night (Usually in between September and October of Gregorian calendar. On this day, the Chinese believe that the Moon is at its brightest and fullest size compare to other day of the year, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn.

Lanterns of all size and shapes, are carried and displayed – symbolic beacons that light people's path to prosperity and good fortune. Mooncakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean, egg yolk, meat or lotus-seed paste, are traditionally eaten during this festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is based on the legend of Chang'e, the Moon goddess in Chinese mythology.

Chang`E

Chang'e is the goddess of the Moon in Chinese mythology. Chang'e was a beautiful woman. Ten suns had risen together into the skies and scorched the Earth, thus causing hardship for the people. A legendary archer and the husband of Chang'e, shot down nine of them, leaving just one Sun, and was rewarded with two portions of the elixir of immortality. As he did not want to gain immortality without his beloved wife, he waited to consume the elixir and left it with his wife, Chang'e. However, while he went out hunting, his apprentice broke into his house and tried to force Chang'e to give him the elixir, so Chang'e took both portions herself rather than giving them up to the apprentice. Then, Chang'e flew upward past the heavens, choosing the Moon to be her immortal residence as she loved her husband and wished to live near him. When he discovered what transpired, he felt responsible for Chang'e, so he displayed the fruits and cakes that his wife had enjoyed which we call it $MOONCAKE
